How it works

Rule explanation

An ongoing effect continues for its stated duration after an action generates it. A static effect is active card text that does not come from an action. Unless stated otherwise, both affect cards in play. An ongoing effect may target when generated but does not keep targeting; static effects do not target unless they produce a strike. When actions and ongoing or static effects respond to the same event, resolve the actions first, then the ongoing and static effects with initiative order and trigger validity checks. Effects written to apply for one or more copies of a named card apply only once, not once per copy.

Example

An Order giving a Character +2 ATK this turn generates an ongoing effect. Printed text granting a bonus while its source is present is static.

Watch for this

Common mistake

An effect described as permanent can still be an ongoing effect. Permanent means for the rest of the game, not that normal zone changes cannot end it.
